11 Theories on How a Picture of Yoda Appeared in a 13th Century Manuscript
written by Sam Greenspan

A historian and author named Damien Kempf was recently searching through books from the Middle Ages and stumbled onto a jarring, seemingly anachronistic discovery. And it's NOT that his was inadvertently becoming the plot of a future Nicolas Cage movie.

In a manuscript from the 1300s, there was an illustration of a character that bears an uncanny resemblance to Yoda.

The drawing is part of the retelling of the story of Samson (not sure what a big-eared alien in robes has to do with Samson, but hey, those Medieval imaginations ran wild).

The resemblance is so strong and hypnotizing that it took about 15 times before I noticed the phallic symbol in the bottom right corner of the picture.

So how did Yoda get into a book from the Middle Ages? Let's throw out 11 crazy theories, from most likely to least likely.
  1. Confirmation bias on our parts on a random coincidence.

  2. The drawing and Yoda are both loosely modeled after goats.

  3. An insanely detailed viral marketing campaign by this author for his new book about Medieval monsters. He IS getting a lot more press thanks to this than he ever would've without "accidentally" discovering Yoda.

  4. An insanely detailed viral marketing campaign by Disney for the new Star Wars movie. They just kind hoped someone would notice this book they planted in the British Library in time.

  5. The book was planted by Star Wars fans as a prank. Let's see Star Trek fans do something that devious.

  6. George Lucas didn't just rip off Samurai movies, he ripped off whatever he could get his hands on. That includes character design from a medieval manuscript he happened to read during a trip to London (that I assume he went on).

  7. Everything from Star Wars is based off the Bible. Han Solo is, like, Moses or something. This is more of a DIY metaphor.

  8. The Force. I know that's not really what the Force does, but maybe it has evolved.

  9. Humanity is really just a reality show (as per the theory proposed by South Park) and the producers got sloppy and accidentally reused a character in two key pieces of our pop culture: the Bible and Star Wars.

  10. Time travelers did it.

  11. Time travelers did it because they read about it on this website.
