Over the past few years, I’ve become almost slavishly reliant on Waze to navigate around. Even when its routes seem illogical, even when it wants me to make a left turn without a light across a major street at rush hour and even when it screws me badly, I just keep going back. Because it still remains better than the alternative: Trying to figure out the quickest route and navigate myself. Partially because of intersections like these.
Here are 11 photos of comically confusing intersections from around the country…
1 | Burlingame Ave. and California Dr., Burlingame, California
I feel like it’s just messing with people to have an intersection between the name your city and the name of your state. This is how people wind up following their GPS directions right into a lake.
2 | East Rd. and West Rd., Jacksonville, Florida
And naturally, both streets run north-south, mostly in parallel, except when East briefly juts west.
3 | Eastwood Ave., Eastwood Ct., and Eastwood Ln., Port Barrington, Illinois
From the map if the intersection, if you veer even a little off any of these roads, you wind up in water. Which, unfortunately, is not called Eastwood Ravine.
4 | Lots of freeways, Charlotte, North Carolina
This is one of those cases where you’re guaranteed to go the wrong way, so you just roll with it and hope to God you don’t accidentally wind up in South Carolina.
5 | Fellsway West, Medford, Massachusetts
I feel like when the same street, which includes the word “west,” is featured on signs going both north and south, it’s basically just a trap to get people to buy local roadside berries.
6 | Harrison Ave. and Harrison Ave., Jeannette, Pennsylvania (possibly)
I couldn’t definitively figure out where Harrison Ave. intersects with Harrison Ave. This town in Pennsylvania is my best guess. It’s probably never going to come up in life.
7 | Montreal Ave., Montreal Cl., and Montreal Way, St. Paul, Minnesota
This sign has a very “Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz” vibe to it. I’m not sure Montreal even has three streets named Montreal.
8 | Peachtree St. and W. Peachtree St., Atlanta, Georgia
Since approximately 45 percent of the streets in Atlanta are named Peachtree, intersections like this are not just inevitable but ubiquitous.
9 | Rong Way and Belt Line, Grand Prairie, Texas
Rong Way really belongs in an Abbott & Costello Who’s on First?-style routine. There’s like two minutes of shtick built in right there. BUT…
10 | This Way, That Way and More, Lake Jackson, Texas
This is some next level Abbott & Costello stuff right here.
11 | 1st Ave. and 1st St., New York, New York
