I reluctantly joined Friendster. Then I reluctantly switched to MySpace. I was too old to join Facebook during its early phases. I was semi-late to the party on Twitter. I joined Google+ once they allowed Google Apps users in and then, like most people, I never logged in again. With Pinterest, I'm taking a different approach. I'm getting in now.
For those unfamiliar, Pinterest is a social network where you "pin" up photos you like. You create boards for those photos. Women really like it. (According to the latest study, 97 percent of Pinterest users are female. I am the 3 percent! But no, that doesn't mean I will clog up your Facebook and Twitter with indecipherable messages about rallies and "media misconceptions" and whatnot.)
I'm using it for 11 Points-ish content because I just don't see myself pinning up photos of cute outfits I like or artsy home crafts I stumble upon.
Here are the 11 Pinterest boards I will be pinning to...
Now I will pin this screenshot on Pinterest causing a never-ending loop.
TV Tattoos - I've covered Simpsons tattoos and South Park tattoos on this site before, but in my hunt for those I've seen so many other brilliant TV show tattoos. I wanted a place to collect them. Because there's no such thing reposting tattoos of ALF and Urkel too much.
Your/You're Mistakes (and Other Grammar Disasters) - I have this random dream of one day forming something called the Your/You're Preservation Society (which would be under the Department of the Interior). The Society would go around policing the country and punishing people over your/you're mistakes. Much like Rex Banner, we would punish them by catapult. Until then, collecting the photos of the mistakes will have to suffice.
Existentially Comical Signs and Wonders - One of my favorite totally-under-the-radar lists was on existential signs. In fact, it gets so few mentions, sometimes I question whether IT exists. (Rim shot!) I made this board to find more random existential nonsense and add a little freshman year philosophy to the Pinterest proceedings. Don't tell me I Kant pull it off.
Unintentionally Creepy Album Covers - So I started putting together my Pinterest a few days ago. I had been going through a phase of collecting photos of creepy album covers, because I have super, super lame phases. I ended up stumbling onto the world of ventriloquist album covers and stopped Pinteresting immediately to write Tuesday's list of 11 Creepiest Ventriloquist Album Covers Ever. But now I'm back on Pinterest and back on pinning up creepy album covers both with AND without strange people holding dummies.
Dog Batman is the best.
Animals Dressed as Superheroes - I have no specific reason for liking photos of animals dressed as superheroes as much as I do. But just look at that dog dressed as Batman. This might be the best pandering genre ever.
Little Kids Sticking Up Their Middle Fingers - When I was in 1st or 2nd grade (I can't really remember, it's been a few), I got in trouble for allegedly sticking my middle finger up at the recess monitor. She was old and is probably dead now... and I hope my middle finger didn't mar her last years on Earth. Times have changed, and now we celebrate kids who give the finger.
Things That Give Me Instant Nostalgia - Every once in a while I'll see a screenshot of a video game or a TV show or a toy and it will rocket me back to childhood. Before, that would drive me to listen to The Circle Game. Now I can put it on Pinterest. "And the seasons, they go round and round, and the painted ponies go up and down..."
11 Points in Ridiculous Photos - Had to have one that actually brought people back to this website. I'm just going to put the most interesting photo from every new 11 Points list on this board. This will not be that useful if you're already a regular. And since you've made it this far on *this* excuse for a list, you must be a regular.
Posing With My Book - I never know who to follow on social networks, so this is my plan for Pinterest. I will just follow anyone who sends a picture of themselves posing with my book (or, if you're shy, a photo of the book in an interesting or uninteresting location). I mean... I can't think of a better way to know for sure who has good taste, right?
So that's it. I'm a Pinterest man now. The male-female ratio is just like when I took a women's studies class in college, and the opposite of every bar in Venice, California.
